“you should’ve taken that deal”
on pressure, power, and trusting your gut as a creator
I had a conversation yesterday with a creator friend who told me her manager had told her off for not taking a brand deal.
I want to preface this with “I don’t know the full context” and there are always layers, but even hearing told off made me stop.
you’re not meant to be passive in your own career
the management relationship should be collaborative.
you’re not there to just nod along, say yes to everything and let someone else drive the whole thing while you sit in the passenger seat.
because at the end of the day… you are the business.
you’re the creative director, the strategist, the talent. the one with the audience, the connection, the instinct.
management exists to support that - not overwrite it.
what does that look like in practice?
🪩asking questions - even when you feel like you should already know the answer.
🪩pushing back when something doesn’t feel aligned… even if it’s a big opportunity.
🪩not outsourcing your intuition bc someone has more experience.
🪩saying “I need time” or “I need space” - energy is data too.
🪩continuing to show up as a decision-maker in your own career.
and for managers, agents, advisors reading this…
we shouldn’t be rushing creators into decisions they don’t feel good about. and we definitely shouldn’t be leading with pressure.
transparency > control.
collaboration > hierarchy.
yes - we bring commercial knowledge, structure, strategy, but creators bring the connection. the spark. the why. that’s the part no spreadsheet can replicate.
this industry works best when creators feel trusted.
not just to show up and perform… but to think. to question. to decide.
